Silk vs Satin Pillowcases: What’s the Difference?

The Silk Edit · Blush Silks Canada

Silk and satin pillowcases can both feel beautifully smooth — but they are not the same material.

At Blush Silks, our signature pillowcases are made from 100% Grade 6A Mulberry Silk in a premium 22 Momme weight . Our new Blush Satin Pillowcase Collection gives you a second option: smooth, colourful and playful pillowcases made from 100% polyester charmeuse satin.

What is the difference between silk and satin pillowcases?

Silk is a natural fibre. Satin is a type of weave. A genuine Mulberry Silk pillowcase is made from silk fibres, while many satin pillowcases — including Blush Satin — are made from polyester. Both can create a smooth sleep surface, but they differ in fibre content, breathability, temperature comfort, price and overall feel.

First: Silk Is a Fibre. Satin Is a Weave.

This is the most important difference to understand when comparing a silk pillowcase vs. a satin pillowcase.

Silk is a natural protein fibre. Our Blush Silks pillowcases are made from 100% pure Grade 6A Mulberry Silk in a substantial 22 Momme weight.

Satin describes how a fabric is constructed rather than identifying the fibre itself. Satin can be made from different fibres, including silk, polyester and nylon. That is why two products labelled “satin” may actually be made from very different materials.

Blush Satin Pillowcases are clearly identified as 100% polyester charmeuse satin. We believe knowing exactly what your pillowcase is made from matters.

What Does a Mulberry Silk Pillowcase Feel Like?

One of the qualities that makes genuine Mulberry Silk special is that its softness comes from the natural fibre itself.

High-quality silk has a refined natural lustre without needing to feel overly shiny or plastic-like. Blush Silks pillowcases combine Grade 6A Mulberry Silk with a premium 22 Momme weight, creating a substantial yet fluid fabric designed for nightly use.

Silk remains the heart of Blush Silks and is our premium choice for shoppers who want a genuine natural-fibre pillowcase with the broader hair, skin and sleep qualities associated with Mulberry Silk.

What Are the Benefits of a Satin Pillowcase?

A well-made satin pillowcase creates a smooth, lower-friction sleep surface. That can help reduce the amount of rubbing and tugging against your hair compared with rougher bedding surfaces.

That makes satin an appealing option for someone who wants a smoother pillowcase without moving into the price range of genuine Mulberry Silk.

Our Blush Satin Pillowcases are designed to feel fun as well as functional. Along with timeless neutrals, the collection includes signature pinks and playful prints, all finished with a zipper closure and embroidered Blush logo.

Two Different Materials

Different materials. Different reasons to love them.

Silk vs. Satin Pillowcases for Hair

Both Mulberry Silk and polyester satin can provide a smoother surface for your hair than more textured bedding fabrics.

Less friction can help reduce rubbing and tugging while you sleep, which may help hair move more freely across the pillow surface and can be helpful for frizz, tangles, curls, waves and styled hair.

The important difference is what creates that smoothness.

With a Mulberry Silk pillowcase, the smooth surface comes from a premium natural silk fibre. With a Blush Satin Pillowcase, the smooth surface comes from polyester charmeuse satin.

If your priority is genuine natural fibre and the fuller qualities of silk, choose Mulberry Silk. If your priority is reducing friction against hair at a more accessible price point, satin gives you another option.

Silk vs. Satin Pillowcases for Skin

Smooth fabrics can feel gentler against your face than rougher sleep surfaces, but silk and polyester satin should not be treated as identical materials.

Mulberry Silk is a natural protein fibre with its own moisture and breathability characteristics. Its smooth surface allows skin to move more freely against the pillow and is generally less absorbent than cotton.

Polyester satin also offers a smooth surface against the face, but it does not have the same natural fibre properties as genuine silk.

Which Sleeps Cooler: Silk or Satin?

Mulberry Silk has the advantage when natural breathability and temperature comfort are priorities.

Silk is naturally breathable and can feel comfortable across changing temperatures. Polyester satin does not have the same natural temperature-regulating characteristics.

If sleeping cool and choosing a breathable natural fibre are especially important to you, our 22 Momme Mulberry Silk Pillowcase Collection may be the better match for what you are looking for.

Why Is Satin Less Expensive Than Mulberry Silk?

Genuine high-quality silk is a premium natural material and costs considerably more to produce than polyester satin.

That price difference is one of the reasons we introduced the Blush Satin Collection. It gives customers another way to enjoy a smooth Blush pillowcase at a more accessible price while keeping our premium Mulberry Silk collection exactly where it belongs.

Why Is Blush Silks Introducing Satin Pillowcases?

Because not everyone shopping for a smooth pillowcase is looking for the same thing.

Some customers specifically want genuine Mulberry Silk and the natural fibre, breathability, premium weight and luxury feel that come with it.

Others may be looking for a more accessible price, shopping for a younger customer, choosing a fun gift, loving a bold colour or print, or simply wanting to try a smoother pillowcase for the first time.

We wanted to create something for them too.

The Blush Satin Pillowcase Collection is not replacing our Mulberry Silk collection. Satin is a separate pillowcase collection designed to give our customers another choice. Our 22 Momme Grade 6A Mulberry Silk remains our signature premium natural-fibre collection.

Should You Choose a Silk or Satin Pillowcase?

It comes down to what matters most to you.

Choose Mulberry Silk if...

Choose Blush Satin if...

You want a smooth polyester satin pillowcase, fun colours or prints and a more accessible everyday price point.

The Blush Difference

Two Different Fabrics. One Clear Choice: Know What You’re Buying.

Silk remains at the heart of Blush Silks and continues to be our signature premium collection. Satin simply gives our customers another choice — clearly labelled, thoughtfully designed and easy to understand.

Silk vs. Satin Pillowcase FAQs

Is satin the same as silk?

No. Silk is a natural fibre. Satin describes a type of weave or fabric construction. Blush Satin Pillowcases are made from 100% polyester charmeuse satin.

Is silk or satin better for hair?

Both can offer a smoother, lower-friction surface than rougher bedding fabrics. Genuine Mulberry Silk provides that smoothness through a natural protein fibre, while polyester satin creates it through a synthetic satin fabric.

Which is more breathable: silk or polyester satin?

Mulberry Silk is naturally breathable. Polyester satin does not have the same natural breathability characteristics as genuine silk.

What are Blush Satin Pillowcases made from?

Blush Satin Pillowcases are made from 100% polyester charmeuse satin and are available in Queen size, 20" × 30".

A Note from Christine

Blush Silks began with a love for beautiful, high-quality Mulberry Silk, and that will always remain at the heart of the brand.

Adding satin was never about replacing silk. It was about creating another option — something fun, smooth and accessible while still making sure customers understand exactly what they are buying.
